Life is hard... Let's make waffles!
I'm a game developer. It's a dream I've chased since I was a kid, regardless of the many, many detours along the way (physics, political science, computer programming...). And while it may not technically be my official job title at the moment, it's what my passion in life is for. I get the biggest kick out of creating stuff for people to have fun with.
The great thing about this point in history is that there are so many ways to fulfil that dream, in fact the full gamut of entertainment is ever growing. And there is an endless supply of people reaching for the same goal, a chance to make you smile.
The bad thing is that there is an endless and ever growing supply of people reaching for the same goal... and that makes it tough to find a job in the industry. As a recent graduate the reality of that statement has come to bear rather heavily upon my head. Finding a job has become the sole obsession of my existence since graduation. I mean, yeah I've had quite a bit of fun as well, but the one thing at the back of my mind is no longer RENT, it's GET A JOB.
With the announcement of studios closing and others laying off as much as 40% or their workforce, it's a rather depressing situation to be in. But if you, like I, are there, keep one thing in mind: You WILL find a job eventually. It might be a while, and life might suck in the meantime, but it'll happen. If you're going to school in the fall, or continuing towards your degree/certification, you will come out into a good market with important qualifications. So keep you head up and continue to do and reach for what you love. Economic recession is a normal and expected part of the cycle, anyone telling you otherwise is a bold faced liar.
Remember, RIOTers, there's a community of people, be it here at NR or elsewhere in life, that's got your back. And no matter what direction you're travelling or which path you're following things will work out. There's been recent news that the stock market has taken steps towards the green and that companies are starting to hire more—both quite encouraging developments.

P.S. I was serious about the waffles.
