Don't Cut Yourself Up!

I didn't mention this last go around, but in the process of mounting presentation boards for a book design for review I... I, uh... cut my thumb off.

Well, okay... I didn't cut my THUMB off. But I cut a part of it off.
Blood EVERYWHERE. It was awesome.

Since this happened only moments before I needed to head out the door to my review so I could test the equipment for my presentation reels (yes, reels plural), I did a few blood slowing techniques I'd picked up from my parents (both medical professionals) and the BSA (Boy Scouts of America). O, and I stopped at CVS on the way to Georgetown to get some gauze and cloth tape.

Later that evening after review, class, and some rather mind numbing pain I decided I should probably get it checked out. So after playing Let's Make A Deal Telephone Edition with my insurance provider I decided to just go to Georgetown University Hospital's ER. They said I'd waited too long for sutures or stitches and reattached the bit I had cut off with dermabond and a bandaid. (It was pretty pathetic, really.)

Well now that bit's coming off.
It's fuckin' gross.
It's dead and flaky.

How's that for a "day-in-the-life" story? Eh?

          We've talked, so you know... but I'm going to respond here just in case there are others wondering. I know Hallie (Hemera) is terribly interested. :P


          About the size of a dime or a penny? Probably in between there... Big enough to be a hassle while playing WoW and/or using Maya.

    I'm having two simultaneous gut reactions to this news. "I am so, so sorry" and "eeewwwww". I really can't say which is the stronger feeling. Have you considered going back to GW's ER or clinic to ask them what you should do? I mean, are you going to take it off now, or let it come off on it's own, or... I'm stopping before I gross myself out even more. I just hope you feel better soon.

    And also that you got bonus points from Sam for showing up to review instead of getting stitches.

      I just went ahead, just a moment ago actually, and pulled it off. I need to be able to use that thumb for hotbox controls and I got tired of it being all... wrong. :P

      It's actually no that bad. What was coming off seems to have healed underneath quite well. You can tell I took a chunk out of my thumb for sure, but it's not bad.


      Ha! That bastard probably didn't care in the least! :P

    It's funny, you think the major cause of injuries like this would be in idustry, but the truth is, almost any dangerous machine is so covered in safety features (It's cheaper than workers compo) that almost all accidents like this are silly little ones that you'd never predict happening. I once worked in a print shop and we had a pneumatic guillotine (coolest. thing. ever) for cutting 500 sheets of paper at once. The thing was *too* safe if you ask me, the thing had two switches (so you couldn't stick your arm in and activate it at the same time) and *actual lasers* to stop anything getting inside the cutting area (such as bastard co-worker).

    But seriously, ouch.

      Seriously though, there's a reason you shouldn't not sleep for 24 hours and then use razor blades. This is it. :P
